Bishop of Lugo
Alfonso Carrasco Rouco is Bishop of Lugo, Spain. He was born on 12 October 1956 in Villalba, province of Lugo, Galicia, in the Diocese of Mondoñedo-Ferrol. He completed secondary studies at the minor seminary of Mondoñedo and philosophy studies at the Pontifical University of Salamanca (1973-1975). He then completed theological courses in Fribourg, Switzerland, where he obtained the licentiate in 1980 and the doctorate in Theology in 1989 with the thesis Le primat de l'évêque de Rome. Etude sur la cohérence ecclésiologique et canonique du primat de juridiction. He was a researcher at the Institute of Canon Law of the University of Munich (1980-1981) and received a scholarship from the Swiss National Fund for Research of the University of Munich (1987-1988). He is the author of numerous articles in specialized journals. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Mondoñedo-Ferrol on 8 April 1985. He was assistant professor of the chair of Fundamental Moral Theology at the University of Fribourg (1982-1987); member of the parish team of Santa Maria de Cervo and responsible for six parishes in the Diocese of Mondoñedo-Ferrol (1989-1991); teacher at the diocesan school of theology of the Diocese of Mondoñedo-Ferrol (1989-1992); associate professor of systematic theology at the San Dámaso Theological Institute in Madrid (1992-1996); director of the Institute of Religious Sciences of the San Dámaso Theological Institute (1994-2000); vice-dean (1998-2000) and then dean of the San Dámaso Faculty of Theology (2000-2003); regular collaborator in the teleconferences of the Congregation for the Clergy for the permanent formation of clergy (2001-2006); and member of the assembly and central commission of the III Diocesan Synod of Madrid (2004-2005). He is a member of the Comisión Teológica Asesora of the Episcopal Commission for the Doctrine of the Faith of the Spanish Episcopal Conference (1995), of the editorial council of the Revista Española de Teología, and of the advisory council of Scripta Theologica and Communio. At the time of the source he was professor of dogmatic theology at the same San Dámaso Faculty of Theology in Madrid (1996) and director of the dogmatics department of the same faculty (2006), collaborator at San Jorge Mártir de Córdoba Parish in Madrid (1992), and adviser of the Madrid center of the Asociación nacional de propagandistas (1996).
