José Alfredo Caires de Nobrega is Bishop of Mananjary, Madagascar. Father José Alfredo Caires De Nobrega, S.C.J., was born on 12 April 1951 in Caniço-Santa Cruz, Diocese of Funchal, on the Island of Madeira, Portugal. After elementary school in his native village, in 1964 he entered the Minor Seminary of the Dehonians of Funchal, the Sacred Heart Missionary College. He studied philosophy in Coimbra and theology in Lisbon at the N.D. de Fatima-Alfragide Seminary; there he was ordained a priest on 28 December 1980. He held the following offices: sent to Madagascar, in the Diocese of Mananjary, with the first group of Dehonian Missionaries of the Portuguese Province; parish vicar in Ifanadiana (1981-84); pastor of Antsenavolo; and superior of the Portuguese group of the Dehonian Fathers. In 1996 he followed a concentrated course for formators at the Pontifical Salesian University in Rome (1984-97). From 1998 he was superior of the Dehonian novitiate in Ansirabé.
