Bishop of Nitra
H.E. Msgr. Viliam Judák, Bishop of Nitra. Born on November 9, 1957, in Harvelka (Čadca district). From 1980 to 1985, he studied theology at the Cyril and Methodius Faculty of Theology (CMBF) in Bratislava. Ordained a priest on June 16, 1985, in Nitra. He served in pastoral care as a chaplain in Nitra and in Drietoma, where he also acted as parish administrator until 1990. During this time, he pursued postgraduate studies at the CMBF in Bratislava, obtaining a doctorate in Sacred Theology in 1991. On September 1, 1990, he was appointed by the Bishop's Office in Nitra as Prefect of the Priestly Seminary in Nitra, and on October 18, 1991, as an ecclesiastical judge. He is a member of the College of Consultors. Since 1990, he has lectured on Church history at the CMBF of Comenius University in Bratislava and at the Theological Institute in Nitra. Since 1991, he has also taught at the College of Education in Nitra (now Constantine the Philosopher University) in the Department of Catechetics and Ethics. On July 1, 1993, he was appointed Associate Professor at the CMBF of Comenius University in Bratislava. From 1995 to 1998, he served as Vice-Dean of the CMBF of Comenius University in Bratislava. From July 1, 1996, to July 1, 2001, he held the position of Rector of the St. Gorazd Priestly Seminary in Nitra. In 1997, he was appointed a Chaplain of His Holiness. Since 1997, he has served as Head of the Department of Church History at the CMBF of Comenius University in Bratislava. On December 13, 1997, he was appointed Professor in the field of Catholic Theology by the President of the Slovak Republic. In 2001, he was elected Dean of the Roman Catholic Cyril and Methodius Faculty of Theology at Comenius University in Bratislava, a position he held until 2004. His work focuses on the periods of Christian antiquity and the Middle Ages, with particular regard to the history of the Church in Slovakia. He is the author of several monographs on church history. Vice-President of the Conference of Bishops of Slovakia since October 3, 2006; Vice-President of the Conference of Bishops of Slovakia since October 10, 2022.
