Cardinal Baldassare Reina

The Holy Father has appointed Baldassarre Reina—a priest of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Agrigento and former Rector of the Archdiocesan Major Seminary—as Auxiliary Bishop of Rome, assigning him the titular see of Acque di Mauritania. Cardinal Baldassare Reina is Cardinal Vicar General of Rome and Apostolic Administrator of Ostia. Msgr. Reina was born on November 26, 1970, in San Giovanni Gemini, in the province and Archdiocese of Agrigento. He entered the Archdiocesan Seminary in 1981. In 1995, he obtained a Baccalaureate in Sacred Theology, and in 1998, a Licentiate in Biblical Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He was ordained a priest on September 8, 1995. From 1998 to 2001, he served as the diocesan assistant for Catholic Action and as Vice-Rector of the Archdiocesan Seminary of Agrigento. From 2001 to 2003, he was the parish priest of Beata Maria Vergine dell’Itria in Favara. From 2003 to 2009, he served as Prefect of Studies at the San Gregorio Agrigentino Theological Institute, and from 2009 to 2013, as parish priest of San Leone in Agrigento. From 2013 to 2022, he was the Rector of the Major Seminary of Agrigento. He also held the following roles within the diocese: lecturer in Sacred Scripture at the Institute of Religious Sciences; permanent faculty member at the San Gregorio Agrigentino Theological Institute; director of the Culture Office; canon of the Cathedral Chapter; and member of the Presbyteral Council and the College of Consultors.
