Bishop of Piazza Armerina
Bishop Rosario Gisana, Bishop of Piazza Armerina, was born on April 14, 1959, in Modica, in the province of Ragusa and the Diocese of Noto. He entered the minor seminary in 1970 and attended middle school and then the A. Di Rudinì state classical lyceum of Noto. Resident in the seminary of Acireale, he completed the two-year philosophy course at the San Paolo Theological Institute of Catania. Sent to Rome in 1980, he completed his formation as a student of the Almo Collegio Capranica at the Pontifical Gregorian University. He obtained a licentiate in biblical studies from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in 1986, a licentiate in theology and patristic sciences in 1987, and a doctorate in patristics from the Augustinianum in 2010. He was ordained a deacon on April 4, 1985, and a priest for Noto on October 4, 1986, in Modica. He then served as vice-assistant of the diocesan youth sector of Catholic Action and head of the service for youth ministry (1988-1990); rector of the episcopal seminary of Noto and member of the diocesan presbyteral council (1990-2009); and collaborator at the parish of San Gregorio Barbarigo in Rome (2009-2010). He has been a canon of the cathedral chapter since 1986, a lecturer in biblical studies at the San Paolo Theological Institute of Catania and at the G. Blandini Institute of Religious Sciences in Noto since 1988, and ecclesiastical assistant of the secular institute of the Missionaries of the Kingship of Our Lord Jesus Christ since 1990. He has been a member of the college of consultors and of the commission for the clergy since 1999, and canon theologian of the cathedral chapter since 2003. From 2010 he served as episcopal vicar for pastoral care, director of the diocesan catechetical office and vice-rector of the cathedral church of San Nicolò in Noto, and taught sacred scripture at the diocesan school of basic theology. From 2011 he has taught biblical exegesis and patristics at the San Paolo Theological Institute of Catania, of which he has also been vice-dean since 2012. On February 27, 2014, he was appointed Bishop of Piazza Armerina. He received episcopal ordination on April 5, 2014, at Piazza Armerina, with Antonio Staglianò as principal consecrator and Michele Pennisi and Paolo De Nicolò as co-consecrators.
