Bishop John Stanley Kenneth Arnold

Bishop John Stanley Kenneth Arnold was born in Sheffield, in the diocese of Hallam, on 12 June 1953. He completed secondary studies at Grace Dieu Manor and then at the Rosminian Radcliffe College in Leicestershire. He studied Law at Trinity College, University of Oxford, and after studying at the Council of Legal Education was called to the bar in the Middle Temple in 1976, working for three years as a civil barrister. After entering the novitiate of the Institute of Charity (Rosminians) and taking simple vows in 1978, he began ecclesiastical studies at the Collegio A. Rosmini in Rome. In 1981 he transferred to the Archdiocese of Westminster, continuing his studies at the Venerable English College as a student of the Pontifical Gregorian University from 1981 to 1985, where he completed both a licence and a doctorate in Canon Law. He was ordained deacon by Cardinal Basil Hume on 27 November 1982 and priest on 16 July 1983, the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, for the Archdiocese of Westminster. He subsequently continued his studies in Rome, returning to Westminster to be appointed chaplain at Westminster Cathedral, with responsibilities for Westminster Hospital; the Vatican biography gives this chaplaincy as 1985-1988. The Vatican biography gives his vice-administrator service at the Cathedral as 1988-1993, while the Catholic Bishops' Conference profile says that in 1989 Father John was appointed Sub-Administrator of Westminster Cathedral, serving in that role until 1993. In 1993 he was appointed parish priest of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St George in Enfield, also serving as Promoter of Justice. From 2001 to 2005 he was Vicar General and Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Westminster, and in 2003 Pope John Paul II named him a Chaplain to the Papal Household. On 6 December 2005 he was elected titular bishop of Lindisfarne and Auxiliary Bishop of Westminster, receiving episcopal consecration on 2 February 2006. Other roles have included assisting in the compilation of two books published by Cardinal Hume, Light in the Lord and Towards a Civilisation of Love. Having contributed to AIDS: Meeting the Community Challenge, he published The Quality of Mercy, a fresh look at the Sacrament of Reconciliation in 1993. Within the Bishops' Conference of England and Wales, Bishop John has been a member of the Department for International Affairs, Chair or President of the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD), a trustee of Caritas Social Action Network, and a member of other commissions. Pope Francis appointed Bishop John Arnold as Bishop of Salford on 30 September 2014. His installation at Salford Cathedral took place on 8 December 2014, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.
