Bishop of Sandomierz
Bishop Krzysztof Nitkiewicz, Bishop of Sandomierz, was born on July 17, 1960, in Białystok, in the Diocese of Vilnius. Having completed his studies at the major seminary of Białystok, he was ordained a priest for Vilnius on June 19, 1985, in Vilnius. From 1988 he studied in the Faculty of Canon Law of the Pontifical Gregorian University, taking his degree in 1991. He was incardinated in Białystok on June 5, 1991. In 1992 he began working at the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, and on March 15, 2002, he was appointed under-secretary of that dicastery. He is a member of the cathedral chapter of his archdiocese, for which he served as postulator in the cause of beatification of Father Michał Sopoćko, the confessor of St. Faustina Kowalska. He has collaborated with the Polish section of Vatican Radio and published articles in Polish religious weeklies, and has also served as a lecturer at the Pontifical Oriental Institute and rector of the Armenian church of San Biagio della Pagnotta in Rome. On June 13, 2009, he was appointed Bishop of Sandomierz. He received episcopal ordination on July 4, 2009, with Józef Kowalczyk as principal consecrator and Józef Mirosław Życiński and Sławoj Leszek Głódź as co-consecrators.
