Cardinal Américo Manuel Alves Aguiar

Bishop Américo Manuel Alves Aguiar was born on 12 December 1973 in Leça do Balio, municipality of Matosinhos, in the diocese of Porto. After studying philosophy in the seminary of Ermesinde and the major seminary of the diocese of Porto, he studied theology at the Universidad Católica Portuguesa in Porto, and was awarded a master’s degree in communication sciences in Lisbon. He received priestly ordination on 8 July 2001, and was incardinated in the diocese of Porto. He has held the following positions: parish priest of São Pedro de Azevedo and parish priest in solidum of the Cathedral; notary of the diocesan Curia; regional assistant of the National Scout Corps; head of the Communication Office; senior chaplain of the Igreja da Misericórdia in Porto; vice-rector of the Santuário de Santa Rita in Ermesinde; member of the Cathedral Chapter; vicar general; chair of the Board of Directors of the Rádio Renascença and director of the National Secretariat of Social Communication. On 1 March 2019, he was appointed titular bishop of Dagnum and auxiliary of the Patriarchate of Lisboa, receiving episcopal ordination on the following 31 March. He was also in charge of the organization of World Youth Day Lisboa 2023. He will be created Cardinal in the forthcoming Consistory on 30 September.
