Bishop Canísio Klaus, Bishop of Sinop, was born on October 9, 1951, at Arroio do Meio, in the Diocese of Santa Cruz do Sul and in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. He received his primary and middle schooling at the Sagrado Coração de Jesus seminary in Arroio do Meio from 1960 to 1969 and his secondary schooling at the São João Batista seminary in Santa Cruz do Sul from 1970 to 1972. He studied philosophy at the Imaculado Coração de Maria major seminary in Viamão from 1973 to 1976 and theology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul from 1976 to 1979, and he was ordained a priest on December 28, 1979, being incardinated in the Diocese of Santa Cruz do Sul. He served as parish priest of Nossa Senhora da Conceição Parish in Santa Cruz do Sul from 1980 to 1981; as professor of the Sagrado Coração de Jesus seminary at Arroio do Meio and vicar of Nossa Senhora do Perpétuo Socorro Parish from 1981 to 1982; as rector of that seminary and cooperating vicar in Arroio do Meio from 1982 to 1985; as diocesan pastoral coordinator and a member of the college of consultors of the Diocese of Santa Cruz do Sul; and as a missionary in the Diocese of Sinop from 1985 to 1989. Returning to his diocese of origin, he was parish priest of Nossa Senhora da Conceição Parish at Moinhos-Lajeado from 1989 to 1993, and he then went again as a missionary to the Diocese of Sinop, where he was parish priest of Nossa Senhora do Rosário Parish at Guarantã do Norte from 1993 to 1998. On April 22, 1998, he was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Diamantino. He received episcopal ordination on June 21, 1998, with Aloísio Sinésio Bohn as principal consecrator and Gentil Delázari and Paulo Antônio de Conto as co-consecrators, and on August 26, 1998, he succeeded as Bishop of Diamantino. On May 19, 2010, he was appointed Bishop of Santa Cruz do Sul, and he was installed on July 18, 2010. On January 20, 2016, he was appointed Bishop of Sinop, and he took possession of that diocese on March 13, 2016. He was president of the Oeste 2 regional bishops' conference and a member of the permanent council of the Brazilian bishops' conference from 2003 to 2006. His episcopal motto is Sent to Evangelize.
