Bishop of San José de Mayo
Bishop Edgardo Fabián Antúnez-Percíncula Kaenel, S.J., was born on 15 May 1969 in Resistencia, Chaco Province, Argentina. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1994 and completed his novitiate in Buenos Aires. He studied at the Colegio Sagrado Corazón in Montevideo. In 1992 he obtained a licentiate in Law from the Universidad Nacional del Nordeste, Argentina, and he pursued theological studies at the Faculty of Theology in Granada, Spain, obtaining a baccalaureate in 2005. He was ordained a priest in Montevideo on 29 July 2006. He was awarded a licentiate in Moral Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome in 2007 and, in 2019, a Master's degree in Family Sciences from the University of Malaga, Spain. He made his solemn profession as a Jesuit religious on 12 March 2015. He held the following offices: director of pastoral care at the Colegio Sagrado Corazón from 2007 to 2017; superior of the Sagrada Familia Community from 2015 to 2019; director of the Manresa Spirituality Centre in Montevideo from 2015 to 2019; rector of the Colegio Sagrado Corazón in Montevideo and superior of the Community of the same name from 2019; spiritual assessor of the Hogar de Cristo; and coordinator and companion of the Caná Movement. On 30 June 2021, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of San José de Mayo, Uruguay. He was ordained a bishop on 22 August 2021. The principal ordaining minister was Cardinal Daniel Sturla, S.D.B., Archbishop of Montevideo; the co-consecrators were Bishop Arturo Fajardo of Salto and Bishop Luis del Castillo, S.J., Bishop emeritus of Melo.
