Bishop of Same
Rogatus Kimaryo, C.S.Sp., was born on October 30, 1956, in Mkuu, in the Rombo parish of the Diocese of Moshi. After completing his primary education (1965–1972), he entered the Franciscan Minor Seminary in Maua, Moshi, in 1973, later moving to the secondary school in Mzumbe (1978) in the Morogoro region. Following two years (1978–1980) of military service in Uganda, he was assigned to the Ifakara State Secondary School to teach History and Geography. In August 1980, he began his ecclesiastical studies with the Congregation of the Holy Spirit at the Kibosho Philosophical Seminary. He completed his canonical novitiate in 1982 in Magamba, in the Diocese of Tanga, and, following theological studies in Nairobi, was ordained a priest on May 30, 1987, in Arusha. After his ordination, he studied in Rome for a Licentiate in Canon Law at the Pontifical Gregorian University (1987–1990). He served as a professor of Canon Law at the Spiritan Seminary in Tangaza (1990–1994), as well as at the Apostles of Jesus Major Seminary and the Marist Seminary. He subsequently pursued further studies, obtaining a Doctorate in Canon Law in Rome, again at the Pontifical Gregorian University (1994–1997). Elected by the General Chapter to oversee initial and ongoing formation programs for his Institute in East Africa, the Indian Ocean region, and North Africa (1998–2004), he spent a sabbatical year at the University of Leuven (Belgium), where he earned a Licentiate in Religious Studies (Pastoral) (2004–2005). He was then appointed parish priest of Kipawa parish and simultaneously served as Judicial Vicar of the Interdiocesan Tribunal, a member of the College of Consultors for the Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam, and a teacher at the Segerea Major Seminary (2006–2009). On May 1, 2009, he was appointed Apostolic Administrator *sede plena et ad nutum Sanctae Sedis* of the Diocese of Same (now *sede vacante* following the resignation of the ordinary Bishop).
