Bishop of Urgell
Josep-Lluís Serrano Pentinat was born on March 19, 1977, in Tivissa, in the province of Tarragona and the Diocese of Tortosa. He pursued his studies in philosophy and theology at the Major Seminary of Tortosa. He was ordained a priest on April 21, 2002. He held the following positions and undertook further studies: Parish Priest of La Palma d’Ebre, La Bisbal de Falset, and Margalef de Montsant (2002–2005), and of Sant Andreu and Sant Pere in Vandellòs-Hospitalet de l’Infant (2007–2009); Licentiate and Doctorate in Dogmatic Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome (2007, 2012); Moderator of the North Coast Pastoral Unit (2008–2009); Lecturer at the Major Seminary (2007–2009); studies at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome (2009–2012); Licentiate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome (2011); Secretary of the Nunciature in Mozambique (2012–2016), Nicaragua (2016–2017), and Brazil (2017–2019); and, since 2019, Counsellor of the Nunciature serving in the Section for General Affairs of the Secretariat of State. He holds a Licentiate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Lateran University and a diploma in diplomatic studies from the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy. Prior to his ordination, Josep-Lluís Serrano Pentinat gained diaconal experience at the parish of *L’Assumpció de Maria* in Amposta (2001–2002). He began his priestly ministry in the Diocese of Tortosa, serving as parish priest for La Palma d’Ebre, La Bisbal de Falset, and Margalef de Montsant (2002–2005), and subsequently for the two parishes in the municipality of Vandellòs-Hospitalet de l’Infant—Sant Andreu and Sant Pere (2007–2009). He also served as moderator of the North Coast Pastoral Unit (2008–2009). He combined this pastoral work with teaching, serving as a religion teacher at the "Mestral" public early childhood and primary school in Hospitalet de l’Infant (2007–2009) and at the diocesan major seminary and the "San Agustín" Institute of Theology in Tortosa (2008–2009). After completing his diplomatic studies, he served as secretary at the Apostolic Nunciatures in Mozambique (2012–2016), Nicaragua (2016–2017), and Brazil (2017–2019), and as a nunciature counsellor in the Section for General Affairs of the Holy See's Secretariat of State (2019–2024). On July 12, 2024, Pope Francis appointed Josep-Lluís Serrano Pentinat as Coadjutor Bishop of Urgell. Two months later, on September 21, 2024, he received episcopal ordination. Since May 31, 2025, he has served as Bishop of this diocese and Co-Prince of Andorra. He took the oath to the Constitution as the episcopal Co-Prince of Andorra on June 26. He entered the seminary in 1995.
