Archbishop of Veszprém
Archbishop György Udvardy, Archbishop of Veszprém, was born on May 14, 1960, at Balassagyarmat, in Hungary. He attended elementary school at Szécsény and continued his studies at Esztergom, at the technical school of the precision instruments industry, where he qualified as a mechanical technician. After his military service he entered the archiepiscopal seminary of Esztergom in 1980, and he was ordained a priest on June 15, 1985, for the Archdiocese of Esztergom. He was chaplain at Érsekvadkert from 1985 to 1988 and parish priest of Csitár from 1988 to 1990, and from 1990 to 1993 he studied in Rome at the Pontifical Salesian University, where he obtained a licentiate in theology with a specialization in youth pastoral care and catechetics. On his return to Hungary he was diocesan inspector of catechesis from 1993 to 2003 and director of the national catechetical commission, and in 1997 he graduated from the faculty of theology of the Pázmány Péter Catholic University in Budapest, where he taught in the correspondence division from 1997 to 2004 and was an associate professor from 1998 to 2004. He was episcopal vicar for social, educational and cultural affairs from 1998 to 2004, a lecturer at the Esztergom college of theology from 2000 to 2011, parish priest of Budapest-Erzsébetváros from 2003 to 2004, and archiepiscopal vicar and administrator of the assets of the Archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest from 2003 to 2011. From 2004 he has been president of the national committee for religious education, and he was named a chaplain of His Holiness. On January 24, 2004, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Esztergom-Budapest and Titular Bishop of Marazanae. He received episcopal ordination on February 21, 2004, at Esztergom, with Péter Erdő as principal consecrator and László Pacifik Paskai and Juliusz Janusz as co-consecrators. On April 9, 2011, he was appointed Bishop of Pécs, and he was installed on April 25, 2011. On July 12, 2019, he was appointed Archbishop of Veszprém and Apostolic Administrator of Pécs; he was installed at Veszprém on August 31, 2019, and he held the administration of Pécs until January 6, 2021. He has been vice-president of the Hungarian Catholic Bishops' Conference since September 2015.
