On the occasion of Frédéric Ozanam’s beatification during World Youth Day in Paris, Pope John Paul II reflects on the Good Samaritan and identifies every person in need as a neighbor, regardless of background or status. Christian love must be active, compassionate, and concrete. Since God loved humanity first by sending his Son, love of neighbor becomes the foundation of Christian life and a means of abiding in and knowing God. The Pope recalls Sister Rosalie Rendu’s guidance and encourages the Saint Vincent de Paul Society and the Vincentian family to continue serving the poor in honor of Christ. Ozanam’s example shows that faith requires practical assistance, not words alone. At twenty, he founded the Conferences of Saint Vincent de Paul, whose mission spread worldwide, and regarded the poor as “masters” and sacred images of Christ. He joined charity to justice and social reform by addressing poverty’s causes, anticipating the Church’s modern social teaching. As a layman, professor, and intellectual, he defended truth and human dignity while engaging opponents respectfully and educating young people. Recognized as a genuine path to holiness, Ozanam is offered especially to laypeople, academics, and youth as a model of courageous faith, humble service, shared resources, social responsibility, and discerning one’s vocation.
