Order of Christian Funerals, General Introduction
Sacred Congregation for Divine Worship
Document summary
Christian funeral rites proclaim Christ’s victory over sin and death, entrust the deceased to God’s mercy, and console the bereaved through the hope of the resurrection and the communion of saints. The Church presents the vigil, funeral liturgy—preferably a Funeral Mass—and rite of committal as the principal stages of its ministry, while encouraging the participation of clergy, laity, families, musicians, readers, and pall-bearers. Priests are to teach, reconcile, and guide mourners with sensitivity, involving families in the choice of readings, music, and roles.
The introduction provides norms for Scripture, Psalms, homilies, intercessions, music, silence, processions, the Easter candle, holy water, incense, the pall, flowers, and liturgical colours. It stresses reverence, simplicity, beauty, active participation, and adaptation to local culture, while keeping the liturgy centred on the paschal mystery rather than a eulogy. Funeral rites may extend to catechumens, certain unbaptized children, and, with episcopal permission, Christians of other communities. Guidance also covers cremation, donated bodies, infants and children, catechumens, the Office for the Dead, and seven forms of committal suited to burial, cremation, or interment of ashes.
