Evangelica Testificatio
Pope Paul VI
Document summary
Paul VI calls religious men and women to renew their consecration as a radical witness to God’s primacy, following Christ through chastity, poverty, and obedience. Religious life remains a vital gift of the Holy Spirit, but renewal must preserve each institute’s founding charism rather than surrender to fashion, distrust of tradition, or hasty experimentation. Contemplative and apostolic vocations alike require intimate union with God, fidelity to prayer, and a disciplined life ordered toward charity.
The exhortation presents chastity as a sign of undivided love, poverty as solidarity with the poor and freedom from consumerism, and obedience as a free self-offering modelled on Christ. Superiors must exercise authority as humble service, while members cooperate through dialogue and responsible obedience, resisting only commands contrary to moral law or the Church’s teaching. Communities, whether large or small, should cultivate fraternal charity, silence, retreat, Eucharistic worship, and a balance between external work and interior life. Their mission in evangelization, pastoral care, and service is effective only when rooted in prayer and the Gospel. Paul VI asks religious to meet the modern world with simplicity, humility, joy, and fidelity, so that their lives may reveal Christ, encourage vocations, and serve the Church and humanity, with Mary as their model.
