Magisterium AI

How to Use Magisterium AI in Claude

Magisterium AI can now be connected directly to Claude, giving you access to authoritative Catholic teaching, Mass readings, the lives of the Saints, and more — without ever leaving your existing Claude conversations. This guide will walk you through how to set it up and get the most out of it using Claude's MCP* connector feature.

This summary is provided for individual users; if you are the manager of an enterprise account and would like to grant access to your entire organization, please contact us directly so that we can optimize the setup for you.

Before You Begin

You'll need the following before getting started:

  • An account at magisterium.com. A free account gives you 30 requests per day, while a paid account gives you unlimited requests per day.
  • A paid Claude account (Pro, Team, etc.)

Note for organizational accounts: If your Claude account is managed by a school, diocese, or employer, custom connectors may be disabled by your organization's settings. You'll need to ask your administrator to enable them before proceeding.

Part 1: Setting Up the Magisterium AI Connector

Step 1: Open the Connectors Panel

  1. In the Claude web app, click on Customize.
  2. Click on Connectors.
  3. Click the + button to add a new connector.
  4. Select Add Custom Connector.

Step 2: Add the Magisterium AI Server

  1. In the name field, enter: Magisterium AI
  2. In the Remote MCP Server field, enter:
https://mcp.magisterium.com

3. Click Add. Magisterium AI will now appear in your connectors list.

Step 3: Authorize the Connection

  1. Click Connect next to Magisterium AI in the list.
  2. You'll be redirected to an authorization page on magisterium.com.
  3. You'll see a prompt saying "Claude is requesting access to your account." Click Allow.
  4. Close that tab or window — you'll be returned to Claude automatically.

Step 4: Configure Your Tools

Once connected, Claude will display the available Magisterium AI tools:

  • Chat — provides a direct answer from Magisterium AI
  • Search — makes a search query across Magisterium AI's content library
  • Fetch — retrieves specific excerpts from documents
  • Martyrology — used for Saints of the Day
  • Mass Readings — retrieves the liturgical readings for any given day

You can choose to Always Allow all tools, or enable only the ones you want. For most users, leaving all tools enabled is the simplest option.

Part 2: Using Magisterium AI in Claude

Once connected, Claude will call Magisterium AI when it recognizes your question as clearly liturgical or Catholic in nature. For straightforward requests — like asking for the Mass readings or the Saints of the Day — it will typically reach for the Magisterium AI connector on its own. You can verify this is happening by clicking the small tool indicator that appears in the response, which will show which Magisterium AI tool was called (e.g., Get Mass Readings, Get Martyrology).

What You Can Ask

Here are some examples of prompts that will typically trigger the Magisterium AI connector:

  • "What are the Mass readings for today?"
  • "Who are the Saints of the Day? Give me a brief reflection on each."
  • "Find resources from the Church Fathers on the Ten Commandments."

You can watch Claude work in real time — it will show you which Magisterium AI tools it called and what it retrieved, before weaving the results into a seamless answer.

A Note on Prompting

For straightforward liturgical requests — like Mass readings or Saints of the Day — Claude will typically reach for Magisterium AI on its own. For more open-ended theological or doctrinal questions, it may sometimes answer from its general training data instead. To make sure Magisterium AI is always consulted, we recommend being explicit in your prompt:

"Using Magisterium AI, find Catholic teaching on the topic of X."

or simply:

"Check Magisterium AI for resources on Y."

This small habit ensures you're always getting answers rooted in the Magisterium rather than a general AI response.

Troubleshooting

The connector seems to have disconnected. This can happen occasionally as MCP integrations are still maturing. Simply return to the Connectors panel, find Magisterium AI, and reconnect. It only takes a moment.

Claude isn't calling Magisterium AI for my question. First, make sure the connector is ticked on in your current chat (see Part 2 above). If it is, try rephrasing your prompt to explicitly mention Magisterium AI — this is the most reliable way to ensure the tool is used.

I don't see the Connectors or MCP option. Your account may be under organizational restrictions, or you may be on a plan that doesn't support custom connectors. Contact your administrator or check claude.ai for plan details.

* MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a standard that allows AI tools like Claude to connect to external services and pull in real, up-to-date information on demand. Think of it like a plugin: once connected, Claude can reach out to Magisterium AI during your conversation to fetch accurate, authoritative Catholic content, rather than relying solely on what it was trained on.
